With a list of screenwriting and producing credits, Simon Kinberg is now one of the architects of the modern “Marvel Cinematic Galaxy” at 20th Century Fox. He is currently involved with the upcoming Fantastic 4, Gambit, Deadpool, and X-Men: Apocalypse.

I had the chance to speak to him recently at the Cinderella Premiere (Disney film that he also produced), where he talked about the importance of establishing each superhero character/team before launching crossovers á la Marvel Studios.

During the exclusive interview I also asked Kinberg who the biggest bad-ass was, Apopcalypse or Thanos. Now we know who was chanting “En Sabah Nur!” in that X-Men: Days of Future Past post-credits scene.

On potential Fantastic 4, Gambit, Deadpool, X-Men crossovers:

“One of the things that Marvel has shown us, and they have showed us a lot of things in regards to their model of making movies, is that the individual characters have to have great films. You have to fall in love in their own movies before you introduce them to other characters in a crossover movie. So, if we are ever going to do a crossover movie with the “Fan-Four” and “The X-Men” universes, we need the audience to care about all of those characters individually. As with The Avengers, we can then make individual sequels to Deadpool, Gambit, Fan-Four and, obviously, X-Men. Each time we are making a movie we try to make the best movie each time out. We are thinking in bigger tapestries now, because of what Marvel did, but also what comicbooks did. People talk about what Marvel does because it is unique to movies, but they took their model from comics.”

On Apopcalypse vs Thanos:

“Well, I have to say Apocalypse because that’s my man. It’s a battle that I would like to see, but I have to lean towards Apocalypse on that one. Partly because who he is in the comics, and because now we have Oscar Issacs. He is a special actor and I wouldn’t want to go up against him.”
