The first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (no ‘Rise of Electro’ for the United States apparently) has been released. After the video I put some of the most interesting parts in context. It is just analysis and speculation but it may include spoilers.

This film’s enemies

The video confirms that Dane DeHaan (Harry Osborn) is the Green Goblin previously seen on a poster. It isn’t clear yet if his dad in the movie, Norman (Chris Cooper) ends up in the hospital after fighting with Spidy himself. But by calling him “Peter” we could assume that at that point they know his real identity.

Nothing newsworthy in regards to the other two main villains: Electro looks incredibly powerful and Rhino wears the mecha-suit seen on that same poster.

Future villains

Something that upset me about the previous film was the amount of things in the trailers that didn’t make it to the final cut. All that stuff about Peter’s parents and “what he really was” was apparantly pushed into the sequel. In a similar move, Sony has decided to tease future bad guys including a couple of seconds of what it looks to me a post-credit scene.

As you can see, not only Dr. Octopus and the Vulture are hinted at here, but also the team known as The Sinister Six. I don’t understand why would they create false expectations about seeing these characters in this sequel, creating a distraction from the main antagonists, and bringing up at the same time bad memories of a crowded Spider-Man 3.

So now the most interesting conversation to have isn’t about this chapter but the future of the franchise.

If we get so many villains in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, would they split that story line into two films to end it in number 4?

That has been used so far only in the last chapter of a franchise, like Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games so it would depend of what Sony wants from its precious property.

Who will be the members of that villainous gang?

From The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Green Goblin for sure. Then probably Rhino, just because Giamatti said that his role is small in this one. Foxx is the main baddie and not his most famous foe so I don’t think he will survive. Vulture and Dr. Octopus are set so I guess we are missing two. Venom has been rumored so the last spot would be occupied by either Mysterio or Shocker. I would love to see Carnage but he may be too similar to him.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be released in theaters internationally beginning April 16, 2014, and in the U.S. on May 2, 2014.

“We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.
It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.”
