After smashing box-office records, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” has arrived today to Digital HD, Blu-ray™, Disney Movies Anywhere, DVD and On-Demand.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Visual Effects Producer Steve Gaub about the creation of the spectacular live-action adaptation.

How does it feel to be part of such a major success?

Incredible! When they started talking to me, the first thing that crossed my mind was the intimidation factor. Given how beloved the 1991 animated film is, there were a lot of chances for us to disappoint a bunch of people. But very quickly we started taking in all the energy from this incredible opportunity to redefine this story for a new generation, like The Jungle Book, while receiving the embrace of fans of the animated classic.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

What made Bill Condon the perfect Director for this film?

So many things: His love for musicals, his respect for the genre and the 1991 movie, his experience with theatrical productions… I can’t think of anyone that could have done a better job.

The visuals are so impressive. How cutting edge is the movie in that department?

A lot of it was cutting edge technology was used, specially to make the Beast feel alive. But above all, it was the craftsmanship of so many people that worked in each second of the film, like the carpenters that built the live-action sets. It was an army of detailed-oriented artists.

How about the challenge of bringing the “animated-inanimated” objects to life?

Bill gave us a strong mandate: They must feel from this world, not cartoons. All of the characters are completely different, made of different materials, different shapes and sizes. It was a lot of fun working on the challenges that each of them presented with a team committed to the task.

After seen each piece a million times, can you actually enjoy the film when you see it now?

It takes a while.I can laugh and get carried away with the music, but it’s hard, in the back of my mind, not to think about moments during production, and how things changed in post-production. I will see it again in five years with fresh eyes, and I am sure I won’t be thinking about anything else.
