Surely you have seen Denzel Washington excel before as the action star he is, in the role of the reluctant hero and the exceptionally concerned citizen that saves the day, not to say the world. “The Equalizer” in this sense is not very original, but this is an action movie that honors its title like no other in a very simple and straightforward way. The plot doesn’t follow different avenues for a complex, layered story full of espionage intrigue and spiraling action; but it is just as fun to see it unfold in a predictable yet entertaining and sensitive way.

It’s true, the movie is full of cliches: the retired black-ops commando that has to keep an ordinary life in order not to reveal his secret past. The “go-to” guy, resourceful neighbor/co-worker always nice and willing to give a hand when things go downwards. The brokenhearted man not proud of some of the things he’s done in his life who also happens to be one of the nation’s elite secret agents with military background and skills. The smartest and brightest of them all who can’t help but rescue the damsel in distress without leaving any loose ends. And, of course, the infamous tattooed Russian villains.

There aren’t any real surprises or quizzical twists and turns. However, it’s also clear that director Antoine Fuqua (reuniting with the actor after “Training Day”) makes the best out of Washington’s talent. Where the movie is amply satisfying is in the way it’s executed. It feels very honest and not only performance-wise but everything else we see on screen has an added touch of sensitivity. Don’t get me wrong, the movie is very but very violent, full disclosure, some moviegoers might be turned off by the swiftness and cruelty with which bodies pile up. Have you ever imagined how many ways can a human be killed using the tools we find at the retail store? Just ask McCall, he’ll give you a few ideas. For those who prefer firearms, the bad guys do plenty of shooting and shelling too.

At the same time, while the action develops, we can also appreciate certain softness, sometimes even tenderness within the landscape who serves as frame for the action. The sadness and the helplessness of these characters and the lives they lead color very vividly the gray violent neighborhoods of Boston in a picturesque way. Something that unfortunately not too many films achieve when they focus on the slashing action and thrill of the ride with the hope of having audiences hinged on its every minute.

The aesthetic of the movie is definitely one of its attributes. The way is filmed, angles and close-ups showing every Denzel Washington’s expression showcases his ability to connect with the audience as the sensitive but credibly tough guy he portrays. I like the fact that the pace of the movie allows for pauses that give a break to the brutality of the killings and action packed scenes. This helps in two ways, first, as a spectator, it allows for some cathartic moments, and secondly, it helps with the characterization because we’re able to take a peek at these characters’ lives and struggles setting the ambience for a more balanced experience.

Performances are very good for the three main characters played by Washington, Chloë Grace Moretz and Marton Csokas. And because almighty McCall is visibly a good guy –despite doing bad things- we root for him and those he helps at every turn and with all our sympathy. “The Equalizer” is a greatly entertaining and fun ride for adults. Those without high expectations will be surprised with a very rewarding movie experience.

“The Equalizer” is now playing in theaters nationwide.
