From Producer J.J. Abrams and Director Julius Avery, the horror-infused action thriller OVERLORD (now available on Digital) lands on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD February 19.

I recently had the opportunity to talk to Jovan Adepo who plays the idealistic Boyce, a soldier that faces all kinds of horrors during a dangerous mission in Nazi-occupied France.

How was the experience of seeing other people react to the film, at the premiere for example?

It was very satisfying. When you are in this industry for a while, it can be hard to appreciate the whole experience. I am relatively fresh to this business. I was very lucky to have been chosen to be part of this film, after an audition process. From getting the role, to preparing for it, and then shooting for 3 or 4 months, which it was very challenging because of the largeness of the movie, to see people enjoying the final product has been incredibly motivating and inspiring. It has pushed me to continue to look for great projects, and opportunities to play really great characters.

What do you like the most about your character?

Boyce is following a moral compass that tells him “You can’t fight hate with more hate.” As a soldier he understood that he had a job to do, but he was also willing to fight for what he believed to be right. Him and Ford wanted to do good, but they approached things from different points of view. Ford is the representation of many soldiers that start as innocent-minded men but, after being trained to kill and follow orders, may lose sight of the beautiful things in life.

There are a couple of impressive action-driven continuous shots with you at the center. Can you talk about the process behind them?

I was able to loosely imagine, what they were going to look like, when I read an early draft of the script. When it came to shoot the opening sequence, there were a lot of moving pieces: Everything outside of the plane was green screen, but inside it was all practical. We had a partial plane built on a hydraulic rig, so when shit hit the fan the entire thing would shake and move to the sides. We had to rehearse a lot to make the choreography work, and it was incredibly challenging. It took a week to get that sequence right! It was one of the most amazing things I have witnessed first hand.

While working on a set that recreates the Second World War, did you ever start thinking about its real-life monstrosities?

Absolutely. It is impossible to ignore our own history when you see it coming to life in front of you, even if it is for a film that its primary goal is to entertain people. It is heartbreaking to think about those who went through that horrifying period of time, but as actors we need to use that as a fuel, to put heart, sincerity, and emotion into our characters.

For a long time, the rumor was that this movie was secretly connected to the Cloverfield franchise. Were you guys annoyed by this at any point?

Not at all. We, the actors, were kept inside a bubble for a long time so I didn’t have to deal with it. I think that the producers were asked about that, J.J. Abrams in particular. It is cool to let people think that they know what a project is about, so you can see their reaction when they realize that it really isn’t about that.
