The relevant and revelatory film THE OTHER TOM (El Otro Tom) has been shown and recognized at many prestigious festivals from around the world, including Venice, Toronto, Tokyo, Huelva, Morelia, and Warsaw.

The sinopsis reads as follows: “Elena is a single mother in El Paso, Texas who relies on Social Services. Her son Tom has behavioral issues and is stigmatized at school as a ‘problem child.’ An absent father further complicates their difficult relationship. Tom is diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and prescribed psychiatric medication, but a strange accident alerts his mother as to its side effects.”

Uruguayan-Mexican filmmakers and co-parents Rodrigo Plá and Laura Santullo co-wrote and co-directed the film.
“The fact that we are parents was the single overwhelming motivator in our making this film,” they explained in an official statement. “It’s nearly impossible these days to remain oblivious as a parent to the myriad of mental disorders and pathologies our children are diagnosed with, based entirely on behavior. It has become normal to create syndromes for behaviors and then develop drugs to ‘treat’ them.”

THE OTHER TOM (El Otro Tom) opened in New York, at the Cinema Village, on October 14th. To be on top of the film’s US release information, visit regularly the Outside Pictures’ page.
